Sister Sophia

Inquisitional college

“So this is the Inquisitional College the diplomats were always yabbering on about whether it was a good Idea or not to fund”

As they walked through the shiny halls she couldn't help but compare it to the fortress monastery that was her home, a massive construction of gothic architecture dedicated to the service of the god emperor. This building’s construction did not have much in common with her home, but it did remind her of some of the other religious buildings she had been forced to enter and not burn to the ground, with is clean marble like construction and great mosaics. A place of science and learning that looked like a chapel, there was some irony there that was lost on Sophia for the imperiums tech nerds the adeptus mechanicus were incredibly religiose, worshiping spirits that resided in machinery.

“odd aesthetic choice”

“Its an important building, so people think it needs to look as grand as the institution it represents, we could have saved so much money if we ignored aesthetics and went for simplicity.”

The nephew muttered

“You need to placate the people paying for it, and massive concrete blocks aren't going to get anymore funding are they. Be awful to work in too.”

“so anyway, you seemed happy that you got me, tried to show of your knowledge of my desires so I have to ask, why me specifically?”

“Do you know how hard it is to find someone with a wish that isn’t deeply personal in its results. Many of those we found with desire strong enough to participate want what are in effect small things, to restore a loved one, to become even stronger, to cure some ailment or to belong somewhere. Strong desires, nobel desires in many cases, but not a test of the power of the artifact. If your desire comes true it will fundamentally change this world, if even half of what is written about your imperium is true the advancements they could bring are worth the risk their wrath might bring”

“What she’s saying is she really wants that life extending cybernetics she read about in one of those religious text.”

“Ha. now your making me sound like the selfish one. Anyway 31 souls for massive technological advancement seems like a better trade than 31 lives for restoring one life, it’s something we could actually use on a regular basis to massively benefit humanity. The other great desires are either incredibly dangerous beings becoming even more deadly or unobservable after the fact, so when it comes down to it you are my only option for the test I want to perform.”

“good luck with that hypothesis, I am still going to destroy this artifact when I find it”

“Unlikely, you think the first thing we did when we find it wasn’t to try and take it apart? Believe me, as far as we know this device is indestructible.“

“I have faith, and that will see me find a way. After all, you were all probably worried that you might damage it and so held back. I have no such qualms. It will be destroyed”

“Realy. After so many battles you will be content with no reward“

“It’s only 5 actually” the nephew butted in

“Well yes but“

She was cut off from finishing as they reached the atrium.

“Ah well, time's up for the convincing I suppose. Go stand on a podium and the director will address you all shortly. And remember you can't shoot your opponents in here even if you hate their very existence. The college will not abide by rule breakers. Oh and good luck!“

Sophia nodded in understanding and got her first look at the rest of those collected to compete. Half the congregation where a combination of xenos, demons and witches. The preist analysis had been correct, these fools were offering this supposed great power to any horror or monster. Literal demons, they must be mad or extremely confident in the human competitors, what doom might they bring the world if one of those won.

She shifted her gaze across the others, she had time to examine the two beside her.

Too her left was a woman who’s purple hair slowly moved in a non existent wind, it almost hurt to look at he,r there was just something wrong about her very existence. Her gaze drifts of the eldritch woman onto the two who had presumably recruited her and noted the odd, numb expressions on their faces. Se had seen it before, on those who had broken under the pressure of battle, their minds snapped by some unspeakable horror that had occurred. Whatever place they had to go to to retrieve the strange woman it had left them deeply traumatised, hopefully the college would be able to help them. However it looked like they might be under the thumb of the source of their madness already, their eyes locked on the mind thrashing woman.

Too her right was a white armored child sized thing that was currently fidgeting with some device or other while muttering to itself. Interestingly the two humans behind them were in bomb disposal suits that looked like they had seen recent use, there were fresh scorch marks and dents on the heavy armor, and they were both loudly whispering at this Jokaero creature to not break or tamper with the phylactery. The Jokaero noticed she was watching and waved at her, before returning to the device in its hands.

At this point the director arrived and went over the information she had heard before from the student Sylveste. Had some of these combatants come here without this very knowledge or was this just a formality? No matter, it was time to pick up the the cursed soul eater and do her duty.

Sophia pulled of her helmet, revealing her starch white hair, picked up the phylactery and offered a quiet prayer to the Emperor.

“Oh mighty Emperor, protect me from these vile abominations as I take this holy task in your name.”

And in the warp something ancient and powerful, or rather a fragment of that something, took notice as one of the bright lights that sang its praise was twisted and sucked into a place other than herself. And for the first time Sophia’s prayers would be noticed among the others.
”make me whole”

She blinked and shook her head a little, she could swear she heard something. Slightly concerned as to what the phylactery had done to her she placed the wire around her neck, pushing the heart down to rest next to her own. The padding and armor pressed the strange device against her skin, as a constant reminder of her duty, her purpose and what she had given up to achieve it.

She replaced her helmet and took one last look at the other’s sorting them by her brief glances into a list of how heretical their continued existence was. Tactics could come later when she had more time to study them.

@WingsOfBronze my current guess is something to do with his hat and Balor, which adsorbed Mario's pozons/soul/lifeforce. in-order to resurrect him later down the line once we return to the castle we need those and... something else, presumably from another game like a phoenix down.

but that's just a theory. a game theory.

“She’ll live but she’s going to be out of it for a while I think. You did well Diva, thank you for your help.”

Sabrina moved her arms under the wounded Zer0 and lifted her off of Diva before stepping outside, watching the helli that was coming down to fetch the poor girl, her hair and blood stained coat flapping in the downdraft it was creating. A rope was lowered and a man in what looked more like an army medic than a doctor rappelled down it. He was followed shortly after by a stretcher that was lowered after him.

“This the patient?”

The man asked in a gruff tone as he approached, looking about him for any threats with the discipline of a professional soldier or mercenary.

“Yes, I've managed to stabilize her. She was shot by a railgun when we were attacked by”

“I don’t need or want to know why she was shot. I am paid to not ask questions. We will take her from here”

Sabrina agreed that was probably for the best and stepped forward towards the stretcher. Together the two of them straped her down, after which the man and Zer0 where both hoisted up to the chopper. Through the seeker that was currently high enough to see inside the heli while it kept an eye out for persuades she could see several more traditionally dressed medics secure Zer0, look over the wounds and inject her with morphine for the immense pain she was in. After that the heli took off into the sky, heading to a medical facility of some kind. Hopefully Cash was paying for the best, but she worried about what kinds of people they had just handed the kid off to. She hoped Zer0 would live.

Sabrina reentered the van, closed her medical case and sat down in her seat once more. The bloody slug was still sitting on the floor where she had placed it.

“So. where too next Runner? Did cash have any other leads?”
I'm still here, wandering why mine is still the most recent post.
”That went well. Good job everyone.“

The immediate problem dealt with the many small arms of the Bess were put away and they began to slowly drift away from their battle formation. The specialists, seeing the coast was clear drifted in and started taking in the sight and sounds of the city. When the two other crew members expressed worry about Fiddlesticks the Mind absentmindedly informed them:

”He’s down in the sewers with the cleaner bot for... Some reason. Some of the bees are helping to get him out.“

The mind was a little distracted by the sensory overload coming from all the neon lights. The Bees were very fond of neon and the Mind was having to mentally nudge all of them to get them to start being useful again. Like having the medics try and work out how you resuscitate a slime person. In the end after wracking their brains the best they could do was to poke him to see if he would get up.

”hay. mr Kallo. wake up. Haaaay. The bad guys are gone. you can wake up now. Come oooon. Rise and shine.“

The hacker bees had started buzzing about trying to find a wifi hotspot or poorly protected router that they could use to look up any information on how to make Hip better and maybe find a bit more about the planet.

”Anyway, as for our prisoner, I guess we hand him over to whatever the equivalent of the cops is around here? Unless either of you have any other ideas or questions for him.“
I made another NPC. Depending on who gets him they might want to keep him around to make them highly volitional equipment for later rounds.
I imagine this would be way to much vagueness for a pc, but as an npc hopefully it lets the writer go nuts with whatever silly things they want him to make/do that they have to stop.

Around a large palace the mist formed, swirling and blanketing the great city that surrounded it in a cold suffocating haze. Thunder rumbled and lightning occasionally lit up the sky as it struck down into the city and onto the palace itself, igniting small fires where it struck. On one of the balconies near the central meeting chamber of the palace a faint glow emerged, followed by two figures stepping out of the mist. They were a straight faced finely dressed young gentleman who was carrying the lantern and a much older woman, dressed in simple clothes walked beside him, her face wrinkled and smiling, who supported herself with a walking stick.

“An odd place to find a committed warrior” the younger man remarks somewhat in jest as the two weave between the guards rushing to put out the fire of the latest lightning strike “politicians aren't exactly fighters or driven by any desire strong enough to get them through the tournament. Much to worried about their own well being”

“And indeed we are not here for them, but for one of the Adepta Sororitas who are accompanying one of them.” the older woman responded, the guards they walked past seemingly not noticing the pair, yet actively getting out of the way without really knowing why.

“She has the motivation, yet she needs the push from her masters to take that first step, so we are here to convince them to send her as a competitor”

The guards at the door to the meeting chamber unconsciously stepped aside and were as surprised as those inside when the great wooden doors were flung open

Sister Sophia

Meanwhile inside the meeting room

Sophia was bored. So very bored. She was standing behind the the Canoness, head priest and a representative from the ruling council as they argued, debated and negotiated with representatives from several other nearby nations on all the topics of trade, exchanges of hostages, religion and other topics. It was all incredibly dry and she was ignoring it all as she stood guard for the dignitaries. She would much rather be practicing or utilizing her talent as a Seraphim, soaring through the sky on her burning angelic wings, bringing the retribution of the emperor down on the heretics, mutants, witches and xenos.

It was unlike anything would happen today though, they were deep in the palace, with hundreds of guards between them and the outside walls, the odds that anyone could make it through all that and come bursting in the door where tiny.

At this very moment the doors were flung wide and the glow of the lantern filled the room. Sophia stepped forwards, aiming to put herself in front of her charges, drawing her twin bolt pistols and aiming them at the intruders when the old woman spoke up.

“I am Margret and this is my nephew Sylvester. We are of the inquisitional college, so you can all put those guns away”

The old woman was smiling, despite the amount of firearms that had been drawn in response to their surprises entrance. She and the young man calmly walked towards the center of the meeting room and for a few moments all that was heard was the clacking of her walking stick against the marble floor.

“Margret, it is good to see you again.“ Exclaimed one of the diplomats after the shock of her entrance had subsided “put your weapons away, I have known this woman since before the college was founded and she is no threat to us. Though I must ask how did you get in here without anyone noticing”

As the weapons where hesitantly lowered the woman responded.

“I have learnt much since we last met, but alas there is little time, the college has made a discovery and we must acquire something from you to complete the experiment. Sylvester if you could explain the specifics?”

Sophia now listened intently as the man holding the lantern explained the artifact, the Crucible and the promised wish. Such an artifact sounded far too good to be true, sounded heretical in fact with it required human sacrifices to run and yet something drew her in, made her want to go with them. The rest of the assembly had understandably mixed opinions on the matter.

“A wishing machines powered by souls, preposterous”

“We agreed to founding the inquisitional college, we should continue to support the initiative even if this sounds unlikely”

“Think of the possibilities, so many problems that we could solve with the technology of the lost city”

“And what if this infernal contraption is the reason the city is lost!”

The old woman let them argue for about a minute before interrupting “We are not here to get your permission, you gave that when you and so many others decided to fund us in the first place, we are here to collect a representative. There is little time, the window for the experiment is short so there is no for more debate”

“From use? You want one of us to fight and die for your experiment?” enthusiasm for the project died immediately among the assembly, apart from the most zealous corner where the priest rose from his seat.

“The Imperium will not stand by and let you potentially unleash this heretical artifact upon the world, to make more nations disappear or worse. This council is a representative of close to 20% of the world's nations, and you want but 1 competitor from us. Where else are you drawing your sacrifices, what monsters are you giving the chance to fulfill their desires if that is even what this machine does? I propose this council expel these two and send our armies to stop this madness”

There were grumbles of agreement with this from the others, non were particularly fond of the religious nutjobs but that was a good point, should they risk what the device might bring?

“I remind you that, as you pointed out, you are but 20%, the rest of the world is behind the collage, would you fight them as well? However perhaps you might like to volunteer? To fight for your belief that this should not be done against 31 others”

That squelched any agreement with the war tactic.

To the surprises of some the Canoness and the priest both rose, drawing a melta pistol and hand flamer respectively before looking at one another.

“You are much too old. Leave this to me, you are needed her to guide our faith”

“None are ever too old to die for the emperor's glory. Besides you need to stay and lead the sisters in our defense.”

The two stared at each other, at which point Sophia stepped forwards, her duty, her desire and the lantern all drawing her forward.

“Send me! I shall destroy the artifact and all those that would lay claim to it!

The two looked at each other and down below the old woman smiled as they came to an agreement. Sophia was one of the most skilled of the Seraphim, she did not hold a leadership position and she was used to acting on her own, often used as bait for her eccentric singing, in those cases sometimes the trap never had to be sprung. She was perfect for this, skilled yet her absence would not greatly affect the power structure of the Imperium.

After some additional arguing between the representatives, Sophia being blessed by the priest and instructions from the Cannoness to bide her time and hold her holy rage for the right moment, Sophia joined the two as they left. On her hips, along with the two bolt pistols she normally carried where the meta position of the Canoness and hand flamer of the priests that had been given to her to assist in her holy mission.

“Now that we have extracted you from the dullard diplomats I think we should talk about what you want. To see your Imperium return to this world.”

The old women remarked as she walked alongside Sophia. Her nephew lead the way, holding the lantern as they walked out through the palace towards the balcony. Outside the storm still raged, lighting regularly cracking the sky. Sophie was rather glad she had not been out flying when the unnatural storm kicked up.

“Of course I want that, all of my faith await that holy day when we are reunited with our kin from the stars. Is your knowledge of that supposed to be some kind of revelation?” Sophia snarks

“Ah but unlike some you long for that day, you need it to come in your lifetime. The others are content with their power, their faith but you need to see it come true with your own eyes. The machine can give it to you”

“Do not try and tempt me old hag, you're wasting your time.” Sophia muttered threateningly in response, yet she could not truly deny those words.

“I only speak the truth. Anyway, here we are” she says, as they approach the mist flooded balcony.

“We are 4 stories up, do you think you can fly or are you expecting a lift all the way there?”

The woman does not respond as the 3 walk into the mist and somehow end up in a large courtyard before a great building.
“By the emperor, what witchcraft is this!” Sophia exclaimed, as she took in her new surroundings.

“Heh, better get use to it, time and space are very inconsistent in the city of echoes. Now come, let’s not keep the director waiting”

And so the three walked into the foyer, joining the one armed monk, hooded sniper, armored halberdier and the 6 other representatives.
@ColouredCyan

if your oratory skill and writing are up to snuff then this is gong to be a fascinating character to watch. Probably going to struggle to get anything done vs the few evil player characters though, so hopefully rng doesn't shut you down before you can show off.
