Name: Thames
Age: 14
Gender: Male

Background: At the start of his life, Thames could not remember the reassuring touch of his mother or father not could he remember any warm words spoken by them. From the beginning, all that Thames could remember hearing was an incessant ticking at the back of his head. Indeed, Thames was born among machinery and raised by clockwork constructs which fed, bathed, and clothed him until he was old enough to do these things himself and the constructs had eventually broke down when Thames was aged eight. At that year, he didn't have the ability to fix these machines, almost starving to death until being taken in by an orphanage where he lived the rest of his life. There, Thames worked on building machines, tinkering with watches in order to practice until he could work on larger machinery. At the age of ten, Thames manifested his abilities, though were unsure exactly of how to use them, simply because they appeared weak and their effects were subtle at best. When he finally realized what he was doing, he was fourteen.

Equipment: Apart from his clothing, Thames also carries around a pocket watch, a set of keys to a house which may or may not be torn down, and a watch repair kit.

Level: 1.
Attribute: Fluid
Skills: Machine Repair, History, Perceptiveness
Affinity: Wind
Gift: Thames possesses the power of limited time dilation. At will, everything in an immediate area of Thames experiences time differently from everything else around him. For the most part, he speed up time around himself so that he personally can appear to be moving faster, actually experiencing time at a slower rate than everything around him. He can also slow himself down, making himself experience things faster, giving him more leeway to react to incoming objects. Of course, all of this could be construed simply as super speed and everything in regards to time may be completely made up.

Tsunozuka was clearly mad, likely due to the fact that their decks were so eerily similar, though moreso because Taiyo was explaining his every move to a person using a similar deck. The boy must have felt his intelligence being demeaned.

"My turn! Draw!" Tsunozuka replied with an angered tone. "For my first move, I normal summon Red Resonator!" he slammed a card onto his duel disk, a fiery demon carrying a tuning fork materializing on the field. "Next, I'll activate his special ability, allowing me to special summon a level four or lower monster from my hand. Arise, Edge Imp Tomahawk!" Another demon apparently composed entirely of axes appeared next to the first.

"I'll activate Tomahawk's special ability. It allows me to send one "Edge Imp" monster from my deck to my graveyard, and its name becomes that of the sent monster." A card was spat out by Tsunozuka's duel disk, Edge Imp Sabres.

"Level 2 tuner Red Resonator and Level 4 Edge Imp "Sabres"... SYNCHRO SUMMON! Everything it turned back. Come, the barbarian barber of beelzebub! Level 6 Archfiend Reverse!" Tsunozuka chanted as the demons converged into green circles. Emerging from them, a more powerful demon composed almost entirely of flame carrying the half of a scissor in each hand. It roared, creating a distinctly inhuman, distorted screech. A powerful glow was emitted from it, sending shivers into Taiyo, Archfiend Cosmocrat apparently calling back from within his extra deck, urging to be summoned itself.

A sixth zone extruded from the duel disks of both players, on Tsunozuka's side, his synchro monster appearing in it. "I'll activate the effect of Edge Imp Sabres. By putting a card from my hand on top of my deck, I can special summon it to my side of the field. Next, I'll play Archfiend's Oath! By paying 500 Life Points, I can call the name of the card on top of my deck, and if I call it right, I can add it to my hand." Tsunozuka appeared smug, having pulled off his combo.

"Hm... I choose Axe of Despair. Is that the card?" the card popped out of Tsunozuka's duel disk, revealing itself to be true. Tsunozuka smiled. "Next, the special ability of Archfiend Reverse! It destroys one of my cards, and in return, forces you to tribute one of yours!"

Archfiend Reverse put its scissor halves together, Edge Imp Sabres being grabbed in its other hand. With Summoned Skull being the only monster on his field, it was drawn toward Archfiend Reverse to be cut in two.

"Thanks to swords of revealing light, I can't attack this turn. I'll equip Axe of Despair to my Archfiend Reverse and end my turn."

@Scarifar

"That's the spirit" Manjoume nodded, the crowd behind him cheering. The body of his duel disk was black with yellow tiger stripes. The blade of the duel disk had a yellow border.

"If you don't mind, I'm going first." he said, before Carnel could protest. "I'll set four cards face down and end my turn." The man smiled. One monster was set in defense mode, as were three traps, or perhaps some were spells as well. "Go ahead. Be careful too."

@Blight Bug

While the Ghoulish Rider was busy attempting to create a new line of machines, a note was left in his Private Investigator office.

The note was simple, reading only "Meet me at the auditorium. Signed, Player Killer of Darkness".
@Deathblazer

Whoever draws the portraits, you need some Loomis in your life.

Duel disks in this game all have solid light blades. Also you might want to reconsider the general design for the lack of pendulum zones and the introduction of extra monster zones.

There usually isn't a problem with half siblings closer in age, though having the same /mother/ kinda makes it difficult for them to be very close in age, though I guess a year's difference is good enough. This isn't a criticism, you don't actually have to change your character's backstory. I've also already heard a good deal from Lord Szall.

Your friends also should've told you to read the goddamn rules. It's #6 under custom cards.

Character not accepted.
@Scarifar

A crowd of people gathered around what appeared to be two duelists dueling. Though really, it was obvious by the holographic monsters that were brawling with one another. Several mushroom-like houses sprung up around the area, clearly the effect of a Field Spell.

"Ojama King, attack his life points directly!" a voice called. Shortly following a dramatic explosion, the holograms dissipated. In the middle of the crowd was a young man, obviously a student, shaking hands with an apparently older gentleman. The older man had large, spikey hair- a style that was not uncommon. He had on a black jacket, fully buttoned up, collar done neatly. Underneath the jacket was a black suit. At a glance, it was clear who this person was.

For several years, Manjoume Jun had been a top level professional duelist. However, seven years into his career, he had simply stopped competing. In spite of his young age, he had retired, and when asked for what reason, he simply responded he wanted to focus on his family, though his personal life never came to the forefront. Judging by the ring on his finger, however, it was safe to say he was married to someone.

The man looked to Carnel though really just picking someone out of the crowd. "Hey you" hey called Carnel. In his index finger, he twirled around a blue card- a link monster. "You look pretty strong. If you prove yourself right here, I'll let you have this card."

@Zepavil

Tsunozuka's duel disk was black with red stripes. The screen lit up, the word DUEL flashing on it, as the disk proper materialized out of solid light. "Huh." he remarked, as what materialized as his duel disk came out in the default angular shape with the default black fill and white border.

"Whatever. I think I'll let you go first." he offered.

He popped his deck into the disk, the deck shuffled by the disk before dispensing five cards for Tsunozuka to use. He smirked as if he knew how good his hand was.

"Hey! Dweeb!" A rash voice came calling out to Taiyou. "You're that other guy who uses archfiends right!? RIGHT!? Well, I'm Akaza Tsunozuka! Number one prospect of this school's hardest gang: The Hateocracy!" he introduced himself, swaggering brashly toward Taiyou. The boy wore a buzzed hair cut, a medical face mask, and an unbuttoned trench coat. The collar was popped, as standard fare for characters of the series, and the coat was actually worn on his shoulders, arms not in the sleeves, giving the impression that the boy walked around like a machamp for most of the day, at least while he had his coat on. Nevertheless, he gave off an air of hostility, not that one couldn't tell just by the way he presented himself.

"Yeah! You! With the dorky hair! Yeah, I'm talking to you! I saw you yesterday, thought you'd be more of a challenge! Then, before I could even beat you down, you got knocked out! And that makes me mad!" He explained. "EUAGH!" he shouted.

"Well, me and my ace monster, Archfiend Reverse!" he produced the card from under his jacket, showing it off to Taiyou. As he showed off the card, it let off a familiar glow; it was the same glow as was let off by the card the girl he had met the night before had.

@The book of bad juju

Immediately after Aya left the cafeteria, two blurs passed in front of her. Appearing again, two elderly men in elegant Chinese robes. Wrinkles and spots on their skin gave away their old age, though they seemed very energetic in spite of this. One man had the word "迷" on his head, where the other had the word "宮".

"We are the brothers," they said in unison.
"Mei!" the first brother declared.
"Kyu!" introduced the other.
"And today we are-"
"-to duel with you!"

They struck fighting poses before somersaulting back, revealing their duel disks.

"If we brothers you defeat-"
"-this monster is yours."

"Our treat", they announced in tandem, each holding the bottom corner of a card with a blue-background, and it was not a ritual monster.

Lua's extra deck:
2x 1x Negate attack
3x 1x Scapegoat
1x magic cylinder
2x shadow ghoul
1x Dark Magician ???
3x Copy-cat
1x giant orc
1x monster reborn
1x soul exchange

Numbers crossed out and changed are the amounts I'm permitting in the side deck.

On Dark Magician, why do you want Dark Magician in your deck?

@Deathblazer

Sure dude. Go ahead and write up a character sheet and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
@Scarifar

Turn 3 now.

@Zepavil

I can work with you to convert your current spell cards into speed spells. I was thinking of making speed spells of already existing cards printed after the 5Ds era free, already kinda introducing two of them, one of which being a Rank-Up-Magic.

Also, you can totally have a duel runner. Just say Taiyo got it as a gift, or saved up money for it, or something. Or if you have a better explanation, go ahead and give it.
TURN 3

The night after the tournament had passed largely uneventfully, or at least uneventfully for the duel school. It was only the second night, difficult to know for certain. Students, who could have largely different schedules from one another, woke up at drastically different times, and had every reason to. Breakfast in the cafeteria was the same as it was the previous day. That is, it was a more savory Japanese breakfast, the food service machines being overseen by the hulking, monstrous lunch man from the previous night, grimacing at the students and teachers as well, making sure they didn't take much more than their fair share of food.

Classes began at roughly six in the morning for those students who decided to have it that early. Morning classes tended to be the least full. For first years, there were two going on at the time: Damage Calculations, which taught the importance of lifepoints going into the basics of burn strategies; and Extra Deck Construction 101, which was exactly what it sounded like. Some students were out jogging in the morning, others having early morning practice duels, or fixing their duel runners. The mini-mall area was largely empty, most of the shops not opening until 9. It was a little inconvenient, though just a little. The convenience store was, of course, still open. It was open 24/7, and sold donuts and coffee for those who didn't want anything at the cafeteria or didn't want to wait in line there. Likewise, others who did not have class that morning could have simply been sleeping in- always an option.

Regardless of the students' course of action, however, the normal flow of school life was interrupted abruptly, as every duel disk lit up with an important and mandatory announcement. This one not from the school, but from Kaiba Corp. Dressed in a white business suit and his signature necklace, the CEO of Kaiba Corporation stared at every single duelist through a small projection on each duel disk. He swept his black hair out of his face and began to speak. A name tag was written at the bottom left corner for those who didn't know the face of the CEO: Mokuba Kaiba, who had taken control of the company after the mysterious disappearance of his older brother.

A smile spread across his face. "Good morning duelists. This is the President of Kaiba corp with a new announcement in regards to a new type of summoning and a change in mechanics that comes with it!" he started, the CEO's voice echoing through the school.

Displayed on the screen was what was very obviously the new shape of the board. Five monster zones and five spell/trap zones to each player. The graveyard, field spell zone, extra deck, and main deck remain untouched, however, pendulum zones appeared to have gone missing. Between the two player's fields, two extra zones which were highlighted for the sake of presentation.

"The first change, if I can direct you to it, is the addition of a new type of zone! The Extra Monster Zone! All monsters summoned from the extra are to be special summoned into these Extra Monster Zones! The extra monster zone does not exist in games where extra deck summoning is used. Once a monster is special summoned from the extra deck, however, both extra monster zones become available! Furthermore, a player can only have one Extra Monster Zone at a time! So please do be careful with what monsters you summon from your extra deck and when. Pendulum Zones have also been moved around! Instead of being extra spell zones, they have been consolidated to the normal spell and trap zone. When a pendulum monster is activated as a spell card, it will go to either the far right or the far left spell or trap zone. That zone it's in becomes a pendulum zone."

The picture of a blue bordered card appeared on the screen, the name reading "Link Spider". Most peculiar about it was that it had no stars to determine level, but several triangles surrounding its portrait.

"Now, behold! This is a link monster!" he declared. "As you can see, this monster has no level and no rank. What's more, is it also has no defense points! A link monster cannot exist in defense position. Cards such as Book of Moon cannot change the battle position of these new monsters! Like Synchro and Xyz, Link Summoning uses monsters that are on the field! In the case of this card, Link Spider, I require one normal monster! By sending that monster to the graveyard, I can Link Summon Link Spider." he explained. Appearing on the stronger link monster, Feel Electric Link Dragon.

"In the case of a stronger monster, such as Link 2 Feel Electric Link Dragon, I require two link materials which can be two monsters. However, a link monster can also be used to satisfy these conditions, becoming the link materials necessary equal to its own link number!" he continued.

"You'll also notice these!" the CEO pointed at the triangles. "These are called Link Markers! A monster with a link marker is considered a Link Source, and any monsters the Link Marker points to is considered to be in a linked state! In addition to the Extra Monster Zone, monsters from the extra deck can be special summoned into a linked state! Two Link Monsters can point to each other with their link markers as well! This is called a mutual link. By having a chain of mutual links leading to the other Extra Monster Zone, a player can summon to both Extra Monster Zones! This is called an Extra Link!"

"Now you're wondering. Where can I get a Link Monster? Well, students of Saotome Duel Institute," the CEO acknowledged the school in an eerie fashion, "starting today, you will have guests going to your school. These guests are veteran duelists, hand chosen by the Kaiba Corporation to test the new mechanics. At random, they will choose random students and challenge them to a duel. If you win, they are obligated to give you a Link Monster! It's that simple!"

"This concludes the introduction of the new mechanics effective..." he stared at his watch... "Now! Don't worry about updates. The updates for these new mechanics have already been uploaded to each of your duel disks!" The hologram shut out, and everybody not currently in a duel was sent to an updating screen.
