Here's an example of how frustrating it can be. 

My friend and I applied for exactly the same programmes for university. She has the better work/life experience and therefore has richer content in her personal statement to show the admission offices.

The fact that I simply have more A's than her, I get offers, and she doesn't, disturbs me.
