I came up with some NPC companions for him if you want to see them:

Aichkay - Droid, C1 protocol with military droid tactical programming and a few personality subroutines from the same military droid. Named for the HK droids of 3000 years ago he learned of from holorecords he found at the age of 16, Kal built it to serve a similar function.
Briansk- Echani female, used to be a protector-slave for a Hutt, rescued by Tek. Prefers close combat, and is the best person in the squad at hand-to-hand.
Tek- human male, medium complexion, two meters tall, skinny but muscular, former bounty hunter. Fell in love with Briansk and rescued her from her master. They ran away to the lower levels to escape its wrath, and ended up finding Kal's community. Heavy weapons and demolitions expert for the team.
Po'mali - Twilek male, pale green, 40ish years, Survivalist, has a knack for finding whatever you need salvaged. Leads the teams salvage operations expert and battle medic, and is average in many other areas, such as fighting (best with blaster), repair, slicing, and medical care.

As these are NPCs, anyone can control them is they need to, just keep it consistent with what we know about them. Ex: Tek wouldn't be flirting with you, as he is in a serious relationship, but Po'mali might, especially if you are a twilek woman.
