The following is not a joke:
He's basically jesus as he was represented at his best + the culmination of all of the knowledge of battle throughout known japanese history + the greatest father figure ever thought up with the possible exceptions of Hohenheim, Haseo, Isshin, or Jubei. 
In fact I think jesus was part of the inspiration for him.
