Happy doodling!
In Their Words: Darkmatter
Guild user and RP GM Darkmatter sits down with Drakel of the RPGN to discuss Godmoding and Mary Sues

1) In your mind, what is a God Modder, and what is a Mary Sue? Well firstly a god-modder/moder, whichever you prefer, is to me, someone who insists their character to be outside the boundaries of the Roleplay. For instance, in one of the RP’s I am currently GMing, gods are a part of the story, they are real tangible entities and as such examining god modding in this setting is a good way of explaining it. Someone who claims to have the powers of a god, or to have been affected by a god make sense in this setting as the specific idea of god(s) are accepted. The idea of godmodding is very much about context. In this setting claiming to be a god is fine; in a post-modern realistic setting, claiming your character has god-like powers would then in that case be god-modding. Giving a fantasy character bulletproof armour is godmodding, giving a sci fi character fire magic is godmodding. Some people think godmodding is just overpowered characters or players who refuse to allow anything negative happen to their characters. To me it’s more than that, it’s any kind of parameter breaking concept and thus is very much based on the context of the specific roleplay. As for mary sues, well I’ll start by saying I’ve seen my fair share and wish each to time to not see another :lol. No twelve year old girl has killed a thousand men, can identify any insect by sight and has a heart of innocence. Just no. Just keep it away from me please :lol 2) What makes a God Modder a problematic RP element? What makes a Mary Sue a problematic RP element? I feel my above answers lead into this well. Godmodding by its very nature breaks the RP and its rules and laws and therefore is the most problematic thing you can encounter as a GM. Well other than true trolling. Mary sues on the other hand aren’t RP breaking but are very annoying. Maybe I’ve spent too long in the grand halls of the advanced section, but I cannot stand these types of characters. Don’t get me wrong, I love a cliché as much as the next man, I mean they’re clichés for a reason, but Mary Sues defy all logic, they are just plain irritating and over the top. 3) Can a God Modder or Mary Sue be repaired during the course of an RP, or would they need to be scrapped and redone from scratch? A god modder in my eyes, is the player not the character, thus the character doesn’t have to suffer because of the player’s mistake assuming the player is willing to rectify the situation. God modding can easily be fixed/removed. Sues however, are by definition not ready to be RP’d in the majority of roleplays, in my opinion anyways. They can be fixed but would and should be almost unrecognizable from their Mary Sue origins, and thus going from scratch is the best option. However, going from Sue to A-O-K doesn’t happen overnight. Let’s be honest, we were all Sue-ers once upon a time and it takes time to evolve onto making better, fully fleshed characters. 4) Why do you think God Modders or Mary Sues end up created? Is it accidental, or intentional? Is it borne out of ignorance or a lack of care? A mix of both? God modding is often an accident, due to misunderstanding or a bit of laziness. It can though at times be genuinely cynical and intentional and that is when it is really a problem. Mary sues on the other hand, I find are born out of a lack of experience and yes, I suppose you could say ignorance. 5) If you could teach one thing to God Modders and Mary Sues everywhere about how to improve their characters, what would that advice be? @Godmodders: Chill. It’s only an RP. @Mary Sue-ers: The advice I give you is to take advice from others when they point out if your character isn’t suitable. 99% of the time they are actually trying to help. We are always accepting suggestions on categories and content. We're particularly interested in displaying people's artwork as a banner (and will fully credit it and link your gallery -- woo).
