In simplest terms, "ed" is past and "s" is present.

Past - Walked, smiled, licked, and stuff like Fought, bought, shot, things with the "ot" sound.

Present - Fights, lights, bites, tries, sees, flees.

That's put in the simplest terms. There are some exceptions, but for the most part my first statement stands.
