I love creating an endearing heroic character only to kill them off and cause a deep wound in everyone's morale.

Oh my gosh I'm turning into Stephen Moffat.

Anyway. If we're fighting back against massively powerful aliens, we should have some means of not getting our butts kicked right away. Perhaps it's something that could be stolen from them, maybe we can find allies in another alien race (there could be other species). A general plan can turn into a good plot, but it will need help.
