Lasers are more of a drone/small craft defense at the moment - point defense weaponry, if you will. I know that we want to expand laser weaponry to cover areas that fall under the domain of CIWS right now like missile defense. Strategic missile defense is also something we want lasers for, if the YAL-1 proved anything before its cancellation. And we're all familiar with Star Wars lazing nukes as they come in, so the concept's been around for a while.
