These creatures thrived on the destruction and consumption of a delicate ecological symbiosis on our planet, upon which we depend all life. I speak of the spirits that exist in humans and animals, mountains and rivers, flowers and trees, thunder and wind, and everything betwixt. The calamity and the creatures caused these spirits to flee their original material embodiments and seek refuge in those whose spirits and material bodies were superior to begin with. Those who were chosen by the spirits to protect them became the spirits’ guardians. The spirits bestowed upon their hosts all of their inherit power to wield in the face of hostility. The concept of ‘magic’ was born. The war between humanity and the creatures persisted for many years. To this day there are parts of the world that will never be fully cleansed. With the disruption of the symbiosis due to the war and the creatures, the world began to wither: the weather and the seasonal cycles became erratic, shorelines along the coasts receded, natural resources depleted, and most wildlife disappeared. This constant conflict with the creatures caused the world to unite under a single banner, and those that did not approve formed their own way of life behind walled-off cities and enclosed communities in rural areas. It became a world of ‘every man for himself’ or ‘part of the machine’ philosophy. Some people believe that the calamity has a greater purpose than that which we can perceive, whereas others believe that it is simply coincidence or bad luck. This has sparked heated debates within political circles and beyond, to the point of religious and ideological conflict. Story The story begins on the day after a campus-wide graduation party. It is summer, but the characters are urged to stay with the academy and work for the administration. On their first missions together, the characters discover the threat of a dangerous individual and the possible threat of a second calamity. In this great endeavor they also learn a disturbing truth about their past. Characters You are a guardian. The guardians of this story are childhood friends bound together by the one who passed away many years ago. The friend that our characters lost was a boy named Samuel. He was a charismatic and energetic young man, who always spearheaded the group in adventure and mischief common to children. The unfortunate event of his death occurred at the time of the calamity and at the hands of a creature, when the characters were roughly eight years old. The war with the creatures induced many military academies around the world in order to train soldiers for ‘The Cause.’ Our characters applied and joined the same academy in order to be with and support each other. At the beginning of the story, our characters are twenty-one years old and about to graduate. I have now returned and aim to see this idea through. I have made a few changes that I hope are for the better. And fear not, I do not forget the same thing twice and especially not when I have given a written account of how I forgot it the first time. OOC
