Why not go with a mixture of both? Maybe the family won't be able to understand why they haven't been invited to the mansion in a long ass time and start asking questions then that is when your character shows up at their house with an excuse? But if that doesn't work for you then just coming up with an excuse will be perfectly fine for me.
