Well there was a bond between Palps and Mara Jade. That off a teacher and a Pupil. Not to mention she was his "favourite" of the Emperors Hands (I had to put of the Emperors or it would have sounded wrong). Still, there has to be at least some level of knowing eachother. With all the Jedi that have died it will be hard for you to find out who is still alive due to all the confusion in the force to send messages. An interesting turn, if you have been teaching you might be able to hone in on Zak and communicate with [i]him[/i] at least partially. Gives him something exciting to do.
