Why don't you have her use her tendrils to incapacitate some gunmen? 

As for why you have the more difficult mission its probably because Pariah wants to separate the wheat from the chaff. Make it hard and get rid of the no-users. Between that, the fact that he wont show any leeway because the enemy wont, and that our enemies in the mission aren't the smartest, you guys just got unlucky.
