Toaw: Yeah, it'd be 2014. I don't really see much of a reason to go back or forward since it'd likely be a maximum of a two decade difference. I'm curious about Joseph's age though. If he had a child whilst in the navy I'd assume he had that child in his twenties. I just want to know how old do you think the protagonist was when he died? Another question is are you going to use that narrator thing as a pirate? It'd be cool to have a pirate narrator simply because it's delightfully unfitting. No sarcasm. 

I don't see much reason to hold him back though, he's really fleshed out and clearly well thought out so Joseph is accepted! And yes, I must always have an exclamation point when a character is accepted.
