It took Kijani several minutes to be calm enough to speak. "What scared me the most... is that after a while, I began to get used to it. I don't really know how long I was captive. Could have been weeks, months? I don't know, there were no calendars and I lost all sense of time. So my mind simply adapted to the pain. For all I knew, it was going to be the rest of my life." Her teeth gritted. "That's sick. No one should be used to a life of torture." She shook her head, wiping her wet face with a palm. "I guess what bothered me more is that I knew I was on my own. There was no television to watch for news, no newspapers to look at. No sense of the outside world. For all I knew, no one was looking for me at all. Even now, I accept that I make my own way in this world, and can't expect a hand from anyone."
