As soon as he was old enough, he enlisted as a pilot in the Federation military. Thanks to knowledge from a retired soldier from his home, he attended the War College of Goshen, graduating as a skilled officer for the Federation, but not one that stood out from his peers much. Having excelled at mech piloting, he was assigned as a junior officer to one of the Armored Cavalry units, fast moving Mech regiments that influenced his future thinking after no longer serving with the Federation. From this, he fought against raiders and pirates from all walks of life, and across any planet within the Federation, from ice worlds to jungle planets, having to adapt and overcome in all areas. He also took the fight to them, learning how to coordinate assaults and defenses with any and all resources at hand, from tanks and recon vehicles, to VTOL's loaded with battlearmor, to full Mech lances, a rare occurrence in many places. His term eventually came up, and he had to decide whether to go career, or move on. Rather than continuing with another commission within the Federation, Jurgen branched off, surprisingly to those that did not know him too well, into mercenary work. Those that knew him realized he had been somewhat disenfranchised by some of the Federation's joint action work and limitation on equipment, willing to use any weapon, as long as it could keep up, to see the job done. He full well knew the flaws of light raiders, and their strengths, and took to filling niche roles in armies that needed them, while plotting out the difficulties of providing heavier, but still mobile, firepower. While his force was specialized in speed, Jurgen applied his practical experience from Federation service, and theoretical experience from the War Academy, making a deadly opponent both personally, and tactically. His early work, due to his initially limited funds from his career in the military service, meant he had to improvise. He didn't buy mechs, like a lot of mercenaries preferred, looking to the tanks and recon vehicles, retrofitting them with lasers and other long deployment friendly weapons, acting as a raider and scout for other, more main stream armies, for the right price of course. Jurgen would learn to work with former enemies and fight former allies, working with an ex Jade Falcon commander on a number of occasions, and fighting the same one every now and again, and he wisely learned to evade the bite of her weapons as much as possible, his light armor and speed the only defense against a rather heavy hitting fist of Mech firepower. But he stung back as often as he took his lumps, so they would walk away even usually, and he respected the ex Clan mech commander, even if his experience with the Clans was negative as an ex Federation Officer. He would cross paths with all sorts, earning his name as an intelligent, fast moving and hard hitting Mercenary commander, with a knack for not using mechs to do the jobs that most people would bring Mechs to do, especially fighting hostile Mechs with hit and run tactics, going deep into enemy territory to raid supply caches before fleeing into the night. But that was only one facet of his job and career, and he planned on having a long one ahead of him, with his band of mercenaries, the Dawn Runners, intact and more powerful than ever before after each job.
