I picture Lela as coming from a society that many might mistake as thinking themselves better than others when In fact their life style is so alien that they seem to be extraterrestrial. They have no concept of privacy, wealth or superiority outside of elders.
They live in massive groups so close together that most other people would find it hard to breath. Because their bodies are such delicate instruments of flight they avoid violence by simply flying away. Each member of their race has their profession almost as soon as they are born and train in that job from as early an age as is necessary
It's because of her upbringing that Lela obeys authority almost without question but it's also that upbringing that makes her think that the nobles are possibly insane or mischosen for their professions.
