Click This is absolutely correct. There's a danger to being in a port when a big storm comes particularly in ports open to the sea. Ships can be bashed against one another, beached upon the shore, and occasionally foundered. However, salvage in a port is much simpler than at sea. Tortuga, according to the map, is an inland port so a storm front would be double impacted. First, the waves would strike the continental shelf, some miles off shore, stealing much of their height and power. Then they have to pass over a small slab of land to get to the port and further breaks the waves. Beyond that you're only worried about the wind so as long as you reef your sails completely you're pretty much fine. As Click This said, most ships just prefer to get out of the damned way when they see a storm coming :) The good part is that there's plenty of wind in a storm front to help a ship move more quickly to escape the path of a hurricane :) Even aircraft carriers, thanks to weather radar, run from large storms for fear of being overturned.
