Exactly. He didn't want to betray Alexi, but he hated watching anyone be tortured like that for any reason. Soon after Erik reached insanity, he was going to hit a breaking point and try and find a way to get him out. Now there's no reason for it, since he understands a little more.

I will point out that that's another thing that totally could have been prevented by Alexi explaining himself from the beginning. :-P
