First of all, the background is a bit shotty, as you mentioned. I found it a bit hard to follow, although it could work well with some work. Feel free to edit your post, perhaps consider a more linear line and checking to make sure it all fits together.

Secondly, what kind of battle training? Karate, front-line style? This adoptive, battle-master father adopted a teenager? It seems to be a bit clunky.
As for gear, it looks good around there. Also personality works as well ^_^
