It would be unreasonable, because Alfred would rule the whole empire. Under the Act of Settlement, 1701, an Abdication would require an act of Parliament. Edward need Parliament's permission to abdicate and while it would be granted, it shows that Parliament is firmly in the driver's seat and business will continue as usual. Alfred becomes King, a regent appointed.
