| Identity | Harvey Carter - Dr. Fate | Origin & Backstory | Before Fate Harvey was born in Nevada, his father a baseball player, his mother a shopkeeper. His life was relatively normal, until he was seven years old. He had an argument with his father about something, and in a tantrum, he ran away. He was found during the night by the police, but he refused to tell the officer his name, or who his parents were, until at four in the morning, when Harvey had calmed down, he told the officers where he lived. They took him home, only to find that his house was being put out by the firemen, as a fire had roared just a few hours ago, two bodies had been found. Harvey was an orphan. But he wasn't put into social care, as his neighbor, Harry, close friend to Harvey's family, took the boy in to raise like his own. Harry was a magician in Vegas, he filled the halls almost every night with his acts, and when Harvey got older, Harry taught Harvey his craft. Harvey had his first show at the age of 12, and his breakthrough as a magician happened when he was 17 years old, five years ago. Harvey and his assistant, Angel, would make waves as the youngest act in all of Vegas for the next few years. - 2011 - After the emergence of the superheroes in Metropolis and Gotham. Harvey did follow their escapades very intrigued being very interested, and when the Justice League was formed, he was more thrilled than anyone. All the while keeping up his magician act. However, with the superheroes coming out of the shadows, people started paying less attention to his magician act, his audience would soon be less crowded, as people would rather sit at the TV, waiting for the next superhero featured piece of news or new blockbuster movie to come out, all of them featuring Metahumans. - 2012 - His act had all but fallen through. Him and Angel had broken up, and Harvey was made into performing street magic for small crowds, earning scraps of what he used to earn. One day, walking through Vegas, he felt a sudden head ache, a migraine of magnitudes he had never felt before. Like an itch he couldn't scratch. He fought the migraine, but after a few hours of him holding his head, the pain transcended into something more.. Into a voice. Sure he was going crazy, he freaked out, heading outside again to get some fresh air, obviously not thinking clearly. But the voice guided him, even if he couldn't understand a word the voice told him. It led him into the deeper parts of Vegas. Into an alleyway, where the young man collapsed. He woke up a few moments later, hearing voices and footsteps coming his way. Two thugs came to mug the downed street magician. The ringing in his ears had grown louder, and by now, he couldn't hear anything else. The thugs were threatening him, and when he didn't respond, the first thug sent a kick into his chest. Harvey couldn't fight back, and the sound just got even louder. He started to feel a burning sensation in his entire body, he saw something glow in the corner of his eye, as the thug were kicking him in the ribs while he was on the ground. The glow got greater, and as a piece of gold flew and attached itself to his wrist, the ringing in his ears stopped, only one word was heard in his mind, and he spoke it himself, an open palm and a ray of light coming out of the palm. “Intervene”. The light had knocked the thugs out, and healed Harvey's wounds. Harvey found that the golden piece had turned into a watch on his wrist. The voice in his head made less noise over the course of the next few weeks, it was now more so whispers, rather than loud screams. Harvey would soon start listening to the voice, try to figure out what it was trying to tell him. During the second half of the year, Harvey would start to realize that what he had was an amazing gift. He was able to, for the first time in his life, perform real magic. It started with creating simple tricks, but it soon turned into him using real magic to make his performances legendary. He did tricks no other Magician had pulled off, and it put him back in the light of glory. - 2013 - - 2014 - | Character Notes | [Equipment:] The Shard's given him power, and it's taken the form of a watch, and whenever he needs to unleash the power, he creates a blue suit with a coat of a deeper blue color, a golden tie and a blue fedora with golden trim. - Something like this - [Supporting Cast:] Angel McCartney: Called Mac by Harvey and people close to her. Mac's a old friend of Harvey and a former lover, they get along like brother and sister these days. She used to be his assistance back when he performed in Vegas. Harry McCartney: Harry is Angel's father, and the guy who helped raise Harvey when his father died. Raising Harvey since the age of 7. Harry taught Harvey about magic, and was the reason Harvey picked up the art. Harry is the first dial Harvey makes on anything regarding his show. Harry always believed in magic, even if he didn't pass that on to Harvey. Neither he, nor his daughter know of the Shard and how Harvey's connected to Nabu. | Powers & Abilities | A trick is something a prostitute do for money. What I do is called illusions. B][Illusions:] Even before he was granted the power of Nabu Harvey was a skilled street magician and illusionist. Even if he didn't utilize real magic, he's always been very skilled at distracting people from his ploy. Before he came in contact with Nabu, he didn't believe in magic, but always took great offense whenever someone said he was performing tricks. He's been skilled at everything from slight of hands, to levitation tricks. Escapism is something he's also got under his belt. He never did try his hand at fortune telling. [Magic:] Since he was given the shard of Nabu, his illusions started to turn real. He was able to perform acts he was never able to perform before. The effects of the shard lingers with him, but to be able to cast real spells, level of magic he'd need to be worthy of calling himself Doctor Fate, a lord of order, he needs to be in constant contact with the shard. While he's in contact with the shard, he posses incredible magical power, able to fly, cast incantations, teleport himself and others through dimensional portals, form energy blasts, understand and speak every language on the planet, telekinesis and even limited telepathy. The shard also enhances his physical features, making him stronger, faster and more durable. However, since Harvey only posses a shard of the helmet, his powers are only a fracture of the full power of Nabu. [Quick Wit:] Harvey's intelligent, and a smooth talker. He's able to talk himself out of various situations with relative ease, and convey his point to people every time. And whenever he uses the shard of Nabu, he turns the attention of everyone in the room to him whenever he talks, just like the previous lords of order did. [Knowledge Of Nabu:] Ever since he found the shard, Harvey's been able to consume knowledge several times faster than before, he's got a need that needs to be satiated regarding knowledge, which leads to him almost always sitting with a book in his hand. He reads everything from literature to advanced science, back to occult books, all in the name of increasing his abilities as Fate. [Presence of Nabu:]Harvey shares a bond with the lord of order, he's able to communicate with the entity unlike any of the other Fate's. Nabu's weak and wounded, and as such, he's restricted from taking over Harvey's body, all he can do is advice Harvey, and even that's to a minimum. Nabu will alert Harvey of strong magical forces in his vicinity, such as the presence of another shard of the helmet. | How is this character different? | Where shall I begin? Just about everything's different about him. The helmet isn't a helmet anymore, it's been shattered and in twelve pieces. Nabu's dying, and it's Harvey's job to save the lord of order, or Balance in the universe would be destroyed. My Dr.Fate's weaker than any other incarnation of him, since he's only got part of his full power. However, all twelve shards of the helmet would make Dr.Fate into one of the most powerful being in the universe. (More or less Silver-Age.) Harvey's a completely different person than any of the other Fate's and so forth. | What is your goal with this character? | I want to do a modernized take on Dr.Fate. Make a more “human” Dr.Fate. One where he's just no a tool of order, but more so a person. I also hope to dwell into the mechanics of Nabu, and how he affects his hosts. With Harvey's mental connection to the weakened Lord Of Order, I want to achieve just that. Also, Magic. Magic's pretty cool, not a power I get to dance with too often. | Sample Post | The rain was pouring as the man, his name was Mark Guldberg, a German smuggler and fence for stolen artifacts. He was running down the street, a pistol on his hands. The rain was hitting his face, feeling the cold of the water from the sky harshly bounce off of his skin. His steps were heavy, yet quick, he sure was a fast runner, but Mark had to be, he had made a living as a thief for many years, and now, reaching the middle of his life, his 40's, he would become a full time fence, only passing stolen goods off, not stealing it himself. It was a nice life he had planned for himself. That is, if he'd make it through the night. Mark ran, he had to get to the harbor. The Harbor in Salem wasn't big, but it had a few places where trading ships were going in and out, and Mark had to be on that one, or he'd miss his meeting tomorrow. As he ran down the street, he turned around, seeing nothing out of the ordinary, putting his eyes back forward, the street was clear. Behind him, a blue hat and trench coat peaked out of a alley Mark didn't decide to take. Mark ran down the next street, just one more block till he was at the harbor. He could feel his legs hurting, and his lungs felt as if they were burning, fifteen years of smoking had a certain effect on you. The rain still hitting him like a whip, his clothes were drenched. But he pushed on, his efforts were remarkable, truly. As he would arrive at the harbor, he would head towards the boat that was waiting for him. But before he could get to the boat, he heard the skidding of tires come from behind him. Mark knew what was coming to him, and as such, he put his hand on the revolver he carried in a holster on the side of his shirt, under his jacket. Three black Honda's parked up before him, forming a half-moon, blocking his path to the boat. Out stepped nine men, all of them big and packed with muscles, each of them had a dragon tattoo on their face and on their left forearm. And then, from the middle car, the nicest car, stepped the boss, a man wearing a charcoal suit. Mark knew who they were, and instantly went to draw his gun, only to be thrown to the ground with the ringing of a gunshot, one of the thugs had shot him in the left arm. Mark crawled on the ground, the rain muffling his screams. "Now, Mark. How about we talk about that money you owe me." The man said, a smirk on his face, as he began to walk towards Mark on the ground. Mark was crawling away from the man whom with determined steps were making his way closer to the smuggler. "G-Get away from me, Alex!" Mark shouted. The man, Alex, scoffed. "We're old friends. Just give me my money, and we'll be all right." Alex had about 20 meter left to Alex, when in the distance, he saw a man in a suit come walking, the man walked past Mark, he was wearing a hat, he stopped right in front of Mark, his positioning as if he was shielding the wounded man. "Fuck you doing?" "Upholding balance. You're not hurting this man on my watch." The man in the suit said, his voice wasn't angry or really carrying any emotion. His voice was without any kind of doubt. "Fuck you. Shoot this guy." He said, waving his hand for his nine men to fire at the man, four Uzi Sub-machine guns, five handguns were all drawn and fired, the bullets were moving towards the man in the suit as if they were going in slow motion. The man calmly put up his hand, signaling "stop", and just like in the 90's blockbuster movie, the bullets froze in the air a few inches in front of his hand. He kept this up until all of the bullets in the thugs's clips were empty. A smile crept up on the face of the man, as he lifted his head, the bullets falling to the ground. Revealing his eyes, a golden glow almost consuming them. Alex stumbled backwards, his thugs as well, as the man in the suit stepped forward, now looking at all of them with his glowing eyes. His fine shoes stepping on the bullets, crushing them under his heel. He fixed his tie, as Alex kept backing while the man moved towards Alex. "Now. How about you and your 'friends' run on.. Home." And as he said he last word, he clenched his fist, sending out a golden half-circle at them, a shock-wave that knocked them all backwards into their vehicles, denting the Hondas, scaring the ten men silly, all of them scrambling to get into their vehicles and drive off. The man then turned back to Mark, whom was now starting to turn pale. Mark was scared, and going into chock as the man hunched over him, sweeping his hand over his arm. The bullet came flying out of his arm, and in a immense pain, Mark felt his arm getting stitched shut. "I took out the bullet, disinfected the wound, and stitched your arm. I cannot heal it completely." He said, as he stood back up, Mark climbing to his feet. "Who.. Who are you?" "I'm the lord of Order." "What?" "They call me Doctor Fate. But keep that to yourself, Mark. Remember that you owe me one. Balance will always need to be kept." He said, before he vanished in a golden glow. He had more important matters to tend to.
