The United States are flattered by Great Britain's kind words and even kinder offers. Unfortunately we cannot accept the 2,000 pounds, or accept so a precious gift as a ship that would better serve the Republic's defense needs both in home waters and across the world. If you seek to pay the United States back, ample reward will be the resumption of the fruitful transatlantic trade that benefits both nations equally well.
