This is a more archaic time, so there are no schools. People either learn from their parents, on their own, from apprenticeships, or even tutors or scholars (for the more wealthy who can afford such things). 

So there are no real educational institutions. Your character could have learned alchemy from an apothecary or alchemist in his hometown that he apprenticed under or whatever else you can think of, but there are no 'schools'.
