Yeah, according to a quick Google search, championship games are called bowls due to the shape of stadiums. Apparently tons of stadiums back in the early 1900s were modeled after Yale's stadium, which was called the Yale Bowl because of the shape, and I guess they also felt the need to model their name after Yale's stadium too. Then the Rose Bowl was made and had an annual football tournament thing going on there, which they named after the stadium. The naming convention was copied, because I guess brand (sort of) recognition is more important than logic.
