What about magic that can make the giant wooden stakes of the palisade around the encampment launch into the air and home in on the monsters? Like anti-vampire surface-to-surface missiles, only smaller and powered by magic.

If we do that, we could focus less on surviving horrible monsters and more on group conflict, witch drama, and noble angst.
