Realistically she could rummage around anyone's thoughts that isn't adept at shielding their mind. However, she isn't insensitive to the fact that they are someone else's thoughts. As such she's been picking people's brains for relevant information, like words of the English language. Once she could understand that she could actually discern when someone was trying to think a message to her.
