If there was one thing Kristoph's career taught him, it's that no plan is perfect. Sometimes, no matter how prepared you are, or how many precautions you take, there's always a chance of encountering someone who is just as prepared or as good as you are. When the woman sat next to them at their table and started remarking about subtlety only working in a royal court, he mentally shook his head. This wasn't some Vinsenian spy capable of seeing through his and Simon's act, this was just someone who made an extremely lucky guess. Still, he wasn't about to let himself blow his cover just yet. Anyone who's worked under cover will testify that just outright denying everything you're asked only succeeds in making you look that much more suspicious. Instead, the smart play was always to keep one's mouth shut, keep the other person guessing and let them come to their own conclusions, because nine times out of ten, the conclusion they come up with will either be completely wrong or just barely off the right track. Either way, the spy in question remains safe, and then has a potential angle to use on the person confronting them. As such, Kristoph said nothing and focused on his meal. He would have liked to return to his book, but that would have been asking for trouble, and there was no way he was going to risk letting some stranger sneak a peak at his playbook. He noticed a movement of her hand, recognizing that kind of caution as he himself had done it in the past. But rather than respond, he just kept minding his own business. While it might be a bit risky to not make himself ready for an attack, it would even more risky to give a potential enemy the opportunity to realize that he was aware of their intentions. Besides, Kristoph was willing to bet that this woman had no more desire to start a bar fight than he had. Simon, in all this, kept as straight a face as he could and simply smiled politely, "Excuse me," he said, "but you seem to be taking quite an interest in us. I'm not sure if I should be flattered or if I should be watching my back. Either way, I think we at least should know something about you first if you expect us to divulge any of our personal information to you, yes?"
