Actually the ancient Greeks already knew that the earth was spherical. No one actually wanted to fund Christopher Columbus because everyone knew that he underestimated the circumference of the earth. They were not afraid to fall off the earth, but that they would be stranded in the middle of the ocean. CC was lucky that there was a gigantic land mass between Europe and East Asia.
