Eh, I guess we can police it case-by-case, as long as we post our teams in advance and agree not to insta-kill everything we meet.

EDIT: What are your thoughts on someone playing a Professor-style character, instead of a traditional, sporty trainer? Someone who knows a lot about Pokemon, and probably has a partner for companionship or study, but doesn't compete against the Gyms or anything?
