Staying neutral would have meant that you would have sat out the war, watching both threats destroy each other. And in the end, both of your potential threats would have been (regardless of who won) severely weakened, putting you in a good position against them.

War ain't always the best choice. I know it's probably fun, but you gotta weigh things out before committing to a war.
