Lingering isn't quite the word I was shooting for but it's close. Think closer to 'echoing'. 

Why would you be sorry for something that you have absolutely no control of? I appreciate your concern however.

There's absolutely nothing wrong about being silly. If one has a silly heart, it is better to act on it than feign solemness and diffidence.
