Ahanu caught the scent of another fox near the water but simply dismissed it. He was rather lenient and minded his own business so the indication of the other could bother him less. Though still typically cautious, he thought that if he maintained a low profile, the other fox would be less likely to threaten him, so when he approached the water and the female came into sight on the other side, he tried not to make eye contact. He learned that others thought that was threatening.
