I mean for there to be small military vanguards on each vessel. Not big ones, but something. I'll clarify the main post.

The death of the admiral was an accidental result of the coup. The coup occurred because people on the flagship wanted to stay in the system (very, very badly). While this is a civilian operation, something like this requires a strong chain of command, so the colonial administration utilizes methods similar to the general navy. There really was nothing stopping the other captains from attempting to stay, but they could have been boarded, arrested, and faced trial (at the very least, stealing the colony ship from the colonial administration would be a serious crime). Would the admiral have just let them, though? It's possible. Even still, the crew of the flagship would have to go with him.

EDIT: By the way, does anyone have ideas for the aliens? This is the one area where I'm having a serious mind-block. Also, I'm currently in the chat if you want to talk there.
