That could easily be a large part of the reason, though we could work it into the fight itself pretty easily even with he history being as it is now. Due to how difficult it is to corrupt a space marine, it certainly wouldn't be any single factor that leads to it, so a combination of temptation and rivalry would be a good way to go.
