In the first year of the Voyager Era, the first civilian space colony was established beyond the asteroid belt. While there had been bases on closer planetary bodies, as well as nearby colonies, it was a bold step in establishing humanity’s presence in the stars. By establishing a colony beyond our own backyard, we had proved the feasibility of a bright new era. As soon as safety had been proven, a few others followed suit, establishing a set of established communities capable of operating without support from Earth. For the first few years of the Voyager Era, it was believed that a bright, prosperous time was ahead. These hopes were dashed. In the twelfth year of the Era, war broke out. Most don’t remember exactly how it began, or necessarily care, but the small conflict quickly spread and grew. Before it could be stopped, the world was enveloped in a far-reaching conflict between a myriad of loosely affiliated nations. The tools of this conflict were not like those of conflicts past; nations commanded armies of humanoid mechanoids known as mobile suits. At the start of the war, the sides were clear; the battlegrounds were numerous, but allies were reliable. Within a few decades, however, those alliances began to crumble. The colonies lost contact, and no one on Earth was in any state to check on them. Even the nearby settlements on the moon were not spared. As time went on, those alliances fractured as countries became concerned with their own interests more than the cause. With the weapons at the beck and call of any one nation, the world rapidly became ravaged by the conflicts, no place truly left untouched. It couldn’t go on forever, not without irreparable damage to the planet. Eleven years ago, something broke. Something about one hundred and twenty four years of war, perhaps the weariness of the world, perhaps the disasters already wrought; whatever it was, something forced a change. The nations of the world, if the battered, squabbling groups could still be called that, tentatively agreed to a truce. They began work on rebuilding, but the process of overcoming the damage done was excruciatingly slow. No one held any illusions, either; while a ceasefire was in place, conflict was ready to return at any moment. Small scale scuffles were still commonplace, but the all-out war had ended. Not soon enough, however, to prevent what had happened; vast swathes of the world were desolate, lacking in any real civilization, if only because of the harm done to the regions. One city, located roughly between Europe and Asia, stands relatively intact, one of few large cities still in evidence. Countless groups had fought over it during the war, and as a result, members of multiple factions and groups are in residence, threatening conflict at any moment, despite the efforts for peace. One month ago, however, a semblance of unity was forced upon us. A mobile suit entered Earth’s atmosphere, touching down not far from this city. It was unknown in type, not matching the technology used by any faction, and within moments of landing attacked the city and its infrastructure. Though caught off guard, the factions scrambled their own suits in an uncoordinated defense. They fought hard, but they were very clearly outmatched; the enemy unit exhibited capabilities far beyond their own, and dispatched significant numbers of the defending machines with relative ease. After a short time of fighting, the machine retreated from Earth under its own power, leaving the bewildered world behind. After decades of fighting each other, the belligerents of the world face a new problem; an enemy they know nothing of. Hello all, and welcome to Mobile Suit Gundam: Extend. This is a roleplay set in an original universe where, after the establishment of space colonies, the world devolved into a global conflict that spanned many decades and caused massive damage. In modern times, a new threat has emerged. Now, here’s where you all come in; you will take the role of people within the city that has been attacked, be you a mobile suit pilot or a civilian. You can be from any one of a number of factions, including ones you create yourself, but understanding that there is a semblance of peace. You’re all within this one area to ensure that characters stay near enough to each other to interact. Here’s the catch; You cannot pilot a Gundam. You can choose almost any suit from almost any series, provided you alter its backstory to fit within this setting, but you cannot choose a Gundam. Initially, at the start, your suit will lack any of the special upgrades it may have in canon. You will be able to obtain or upgrade to better mobile suits later. Factions: Factions, after such an extensive war, are weak and battered. Additionally, there are many, many factions in existence, in a variety of sizes. As elaborated in the Int Check:
We're working to keep this mostly vague so that players can make things up as they desire, but here's the general outline; when the world went to hell, people tended to either strike out on their own, or team up for survival. The Commonwealth states, as noted in multiple profiles, are one of the 'major' players still around. I say 'major' because every faction is so beaten to hell and back that you can't really call any of them potent anymore. Much of North America loosely banded together into what is referred to as the "North American League", and China and some of the countries near it worked together as a major powerhouse to counter those.
Location: Everyone starts in the same city, New Anaheim, more commonly called “the city”. This city is located roughly midway between Europe and Asia, and has been fought over by all sides for over a century. Due to its constant changing of hands, few remember, or care, about what it was originally called. Now it is the central location of the newly reformed Earth Sphere Federation. The center of the city is in the best shape, as it is made up of newly built embassies surrounding the ESF headquarters. Each embassy is guarded by troops from each faction’s own militaries, and this often includes mobile suits. This region is also where the very small upper class lives. Just outside of this central area is a thin band of middle class accommodations, reasonably comfortable. As you progress further outwards, the city falls into further disrepair, eventually becoming slums, and ultimately, not much more than ruins. Many buildings are converted military bases that were abandoned over the course of the war. At the very edge of the city, most ‘influential’ powers maintain military bases. FAQ: Q. How are beam weapons handled here?
Beam weapons are split largely in two. Beam sabers are about as deadly as they're usually depicted; they won't tear through armor like tissue paper, and they'll certainly slow down once they hit, but they're going to cut fairly easily. Beams in projectile weapons are a little weaker; you're not likely to be one-shotting anyone. The average mid-range beam weapon will do some serious damage, and likely penetrate the armor a ways, but it's not going to punch straight through the whole machine. A beam sniper rifle will be a little tougher, but it's also harder to get off a decent shot after the first one. Again, not likely to be one hit killing.
Q. We have units from different canonical eras here. How do they compare?
To use a present example, we have a GM and a Jegan. Canonically, the Jegan was newer than the GM, and more improved. That's to a degree true here as well; the Jegan is still designed based on the GM, but it isn't massively superior inherently. All newer suits have their strengths, but they're considered to be largely on par with other suits. The logic being, for example, that a GM is still in service because they're just that capable and hardy. A Jegan is a little higher tech, but it doesn't outclass one in and of itself. TL;DR, newer does not inherently equal better. All player suits have roughly equivalent 'power', they're just differently specialized. This is mostly to prevent someone who picked a newer suit from curb-stomping everything and everyone.
Q. Are there any mass production units that aren’t allowed? A. For the moment, yes. Units are approved on a case by case basis, but known to be unallowed for the moment are Strike Daggers, Astrays, and other units that too much resemble a Gundam. This is for plot reasons, and you will likely have the chance to use one later on. Q. Can I be a Newtype? A. No, for multiple reasons. Firstly, ‘Newtypes’ as such don’t exist here; there will be an equivalent, but we have not revealed it yet. When we reveal the specifics, you may be able to make your character one. But for now, no.
