A [i]self-trained[/i] novice, actually, Selia. If he formed a non-magical bond of friendship with the wolf before-hand, I think it would be quite simple for him to take the next step and magically bond with it. The wolf just wouldn't receive too much of a benefit from the bond. It would remain a mundane wolf in most/all respects.

(Though I am not Tali, and her perspective on Conjuration might be different)
