Three things to address,1. I am lost in all things relating to the military. Do we spend one year's worth of our income on our military, and then that's that and we have no money? Or do we take our income for a year, spend it on the military, and then have another year's worth in our coffers?

1. You know that total amount of money that you calculated? You start with that. Any weapons bought comes out of that initial total.
As far as the rules explain it, when you define military in your nation sheet, ergo before the launch of the IC, you can buy military for "free", meaning you can get as much as you'd like and it is NOT subtracted from your coffers. However, the total cost of your "free" purchases must not exceed a limit equal to your total yearly income. That said, I'd advise caution since upkeep can be quite brutal if you're not prepared for them. When looking at the costs of weapons and equipment, always multiply the listed upkeep value by 4, since it is listed seasonally, but income is generally considered annually. A crossbow really costs 10/20 and not 10/5 in that sense, meaning every year you pay two crossbows on top of the one you own, which is nuts.
You must first select the fief you will raise your troops from. It costs nothing to call the troops to war, save the men themselves. Next, you must decide how the troops will be outfitted. You are limited to starting with as many men as you can afford to arm with an annum's supply of bullis, but these bullis are not subtracted from your treasury at the game's start.
