Dark Matter comes in, hear Serenity, get's up to her. He see's the vest and the first thing he does is wrap his body around it. Than he consumes it in one go. Consuming it turns it into raw material and than, due to his weird alien physiology, knowledge of how it's made. It ultimately removes the bombs.
