First, we need to establish what they are. I'm guessing fish-people, with the fact that they stink and have to migrate, it may be like Salmon, where they have to go back to their home stream once a year to spawn. Or, it could be a religious pilgrimage,with the migration being a ceremonial journey to some sacred space phenomenon.
But I'd think we could skip to it once everyone checks in.
