We would be Julius's crew, a group of spacers he pulled together to try and turn a profit hauling cargo or smuggling, or mining, or salvaging, or whatever we need to do to turn a profit. I'll post what I've wrote so far about the story:
Earth is severely overpopulated and resource deprived, so much so that the government has to give people electrical energy (200 megajoules per day for adults, 150 megajoules for people 16-18, and 100 megajoules for people under 16) so that they can afford to run their electronics, heat, cars, etc. My character's cousin recently bought a one hundred year old mining ship (it was designed to be highly self-sufficient, land on asteroids, mine and smelt ore there, then chemically extract all of the really valuable stuff like uranium, thorium, platinum, and iridium.) He invited me out to a trade station, from Earth, to join his crew. There are aliens, but they aren't usually any more strange than their biology and customs dictate. (For example, there's a cat-like alien female on the station that fasts all animal protein except micro-fauna for 11 days every 17 months, as a ceremonial remembrance of the famine that occurred on her homeworld a century ago. Other than that, she's a slightly crazy slut that runs a weapons shop on the station.) The only tech I'm really set on is that Earth's best warp drive, the only tech they have with the potential to go FTL, is limited to .1 C on the fastest vessels, which are military or belong to the hideously rich. Also, 120 years ago someone discovered that if you sent a pulse of electricity through certain types of crystals that the amperage of that pulse would be amplified and that some of the crystal would break up in order to supply this energy. This lead to the creation of crystal batteries. They contain a circuit that regulates these pulses to give you the exact amount of energy you need and to increase the efficiency of the charge/discharge cycle. Low grade batteries use graphene wires in them, mid grade use carbon nanotubes, and high grade uses superconductors. For the most common type, cesium silicate, a standard 1cmx1cmx4cm low grade cell produces 1200v 3amp max output, a mid grade produces 1200v 5amp max, and a high grade produces 1200v 10amp max output. All of the ones of this size and chemistry store a maximum of 500 megajoules. I only need this for my first mission, as it will involve me explaining how earth, with its 15 billion people, is a third world country and how everyone there uses the cells for storing the energy the government gives them, because it's valuable. Also, every colony in the system is geared towards keeping Earth around, and the government uses the military to "protect its citizens" and make sure that continues.
Our first mission will be to try and offload a million defective power cells that someone conned Julius into buying from them. We'll go to Earth to do that, since the people there don't care if you can only discharge it at half speed or it overheats. We can't land though, so we'll dock at a space station in orbit, maybe at a space elevator. I might have to implement a "Cowboy Bebop" style warp system for moving around the solar system so it doesn't take 7 months to go between Earth and Mars. I'll post a CS tonight or sometime today.
