Except, they were trying to closely follow the manga. And the manga did not leave L's death for the ending.

I actually feel the need to congratulate the Death Note anime for doing such a fantastic job at staying true to the manga. For the vast majority of the series, everything that happens is almost exactly the same as how it happened in the source material, and you don't normally see that in anime. The only thing that was off was the ending, and even then, only at the very [i]very[/i] end did it start to look like a different beast.

But then, I guess every anime has to end differently from the manga. A shame.
