Laurier is expected to continue his platform of staunch defence of Canadian industry, by way of his policy of high tariffs on the import of foreign manufactured goods. The Liberals are also presenting a strong focus on settlement of the Northwest Territory, to expand Canada's provincial repertoire. The Conservatives will now resign themselves to the position of Official Opposition, where they will have a large base of support to build off of to make another push for the Prime Minister's Office next election. Among the numerous critiques to be offered by the Conservatives are an outcry of support in favour of a slow and gradually entry into self-governance for Canada, drawing contrast to Sir Wilfrid Laurier's stance of eagerly furthering Canadian autonomy." The west of the country of Canada is a land of wide, empty spaces; a territory of good, arable land, with few men to farm it. The urban city centres of our country's east are not enough to populate this huge expanse, and it is for that reason that your nation's government, under my leadership, campaigns so markedly to encourage migration from the whole of the European continent to our fine nation. Many familiar faces accompany this wave of immigration—the British, well established in our land, fit in well and find themselves all at home once they have arrived upon our shores. But too, come unfamiliar faces. The Germans, Ukrainians and Poles, eager to make a new life for themselves in a bountiful new country, eager to share in the culture and the identity of Canada, and the Canadian way of life. When a man finds himself in a friendly and hospitable hard, it is a trial for him not to become accustomed to it, not to become assimilated, and in our case, a Canadian, through and through. When he faces adversity, though, when trials and tribulations, and the molestation of justice await his arrival to this new land, he will be unable to find himself welcome, no matter how hard he may try. It is essential, Canadians, whether you be of British or of French stock, that when newcomers arrive with fresh faces and much to offer the country, you welcome them, and help them to share in your nation's splendour. We have a mountain of work ahead to help forge a new arm of the Canadian nation, in the west. It is these newcomers, these identities which loan themselves to the creation of this arm, that are our tools to help construct it. If the West is to be settled, the German is to be welcomed. If the West is to be civilized, the Pole and the Ukrainian is to be welcomed. And if our country is to have a bright future, and the new century is to be the Canadian century, when our nation finds itself in an enviable position to all the world round, then, it is all those Europeans that desire to share in that position, in that glory, that are to be welcomed! Canada is great, my countrymen. Each and every settler that arrives along our eastern shores, arrives to make it all the greater. God save our Queen, and heaven bless.
