Sorry about Joseph's "programming." I think it's sort of a defense mechanism for him at this point. When he's confronted by emotions he does not want to feel, it's easier for him to bury them if he reminds himself that, strictly speaking, he is not supposed to be feeling anything. I can imagine that 500 years of slavery would do that to a person.
