One day, just one day without anything crazy happening in my life. No one trying to kidnap me. No one trying to kill me. No one trying to do anything to me or my friends. You don’t know how much of a relief this is for me! Some normalcy for me. I went to class, ate lunch with my roommates. Heck, I even started to do some homework. I must be going crazy if homework is starting to sound enjoyable. Well, while I was reclining on my bed, reading one of my textbooks, minding my own business, guess who of all people poked their nose into my business. Freaking ‘Athena’, patron goddess of ‘getting Aubrey into trouble’. Why did I have to open my big mouth about today being normal? I bet she’s doing this to spite me, and I’m not the type of girl who would gamble, too. “Aubrey,” Athena announced, “Are you ready for your next task?” “Um…” I started, even though I already knew my answer, “No.” “What?” Athena was puzzled at my response. She did not foresee me rejecting her offer. “I said ‘no’. What’s the big deal?” “But you are my avatar, Aubrey,” Athena attempted to explain, “You must be prepared for the day on which I will call upon your aid to save the world as we know it.” I closed the textbook that was in my hand, even though I was not finished reading my assigned readings yet. What the heck was Athena talking about? “I didn’t choose to be your ‘avatar’. So we’re going by my schedule.” “Avatars never volunteer for the job. They are always chosen by fate.” “Well, I make my own fate. And I say I’m keeping my butt planted in this bed.” “But the city of Lost Haven is under siege by extra-dimensional fiends that your Christian society mistakenly calls ‘demons’.” “And how’s that my problem?” I probably should not have said that. In response to my refusal of playing ‘super-hero’, Athena calmly walked over to where I was reclining on my bed. She then placed her hand on my shoulder. What’s the worst possible thing that could happen from this? *sarcasm* Oh wait, she can teleport me wherever she wants if she makes physical contact. Oh, how wonderful! *sarcasm* One moment, I was lying down in my comfortable bed, reading my textbook, the next, I was standing in a dank, dark, tunnel that smelted awful. And somehow I was back into what I like to call my “gender bending Spider-Man costume” (at least it was clean now after I washed it). However, it wouldn’t be clean for long. I was already standing in murky water. Only God knows what I was stepping on. The only thing that I could be thankful for was that the temperature was actually quite mild, in spite of it being late January. Suddenly, I felt what seemed like a gust of wind and water splashing against my back. Not only I am going to be stepping in this gross water, but now I am being bathed in it. I swear, if Athena is doing this to spite me, I’m going to… Before I could finish that thought, I felt another gust and another splash of water. When I turned around, there was a giant snake the size of an eighteen wheeler waiting right behind me. As it opened its mouth, I beheld the skewers that were its teeth. It’s official now. Athena has placed me in this position to spite me. I hope she’s happy now that her ‘avatar’ is about ready to be devoured by some freakish snake demon, which Athena would say wasn’t an actual demon but an extra-dimensional fiend. What’s the [explicit] difference!
