Oxford has no entry for [i]artifact[/i], only [i]artefact[/i]. It comes from the Italian [i]artefatto[/i], from Latin [i]arte[/i]. In Wiktionary, [i]artifact[/i] is first said to be an "alteration of artefact". By all accounts, [i]artefact[/i] is correct and [i]artifact[/i] was born [i]from[/i] artefact.
