The idea that the Fire nation managed to conquer the world, and the clear amount of effort you put into making it believable and logical appealed to me. The fact that it's a fight against impossible odds and a race to reach and [s]brainwash[/s] procure the loyalty of the Avatar just make it more interesting. Oh and the creative freedom. 'Want to make an ex-royalty character? Go right ahead!'
