It exists because unisexual names exist, also a bunch of other reasons including it just being a normal part of documentation, as well as for immediate identification. If the gender is explicitly stated right out in the open, it's a lot easier to tell what gender they are than if we had to go through their bio or something and look for the pronoun they use to refer to themselves.
