I'm not so sure. Having a backup without your current memories would be tantamount to a clone of you and not actually [i]you[/i] if you see what I mean. So for the individual dying it would be true death with no continuity of conciousness between old and new bodies. I reckon that would be a damn sight scarier than dealing with a personality upload (although granted, both seem pretty bloody traumatising).
