Vex: It sounded like you were talking about some sort of property of nanobots. And for the sake of not explaining quite so much, I will say this: You can overwork them, short them out, remove them, destroy them even. All of those things are incredibly difficult and take a while to do. You could also take control of them, but that's nasty business.
